My pieces tend to be figurative, focusing on positive images of women of African descent. However, when living in New York City (2003-2011), I began making quilts with abstract designs, sometimes combining both techniques and getting interesting results. I love to use lively colors, rich African fabrics, and will often embellish with cowrie shells, buttons, pendants, and rocks for added texture.

Each art quilt I make combines hours of delicate hand stitching and applique shapes to enhance the overall theme of the quilt. Please take a closer look at quilts I have made in the quilt gallery. Commission inquiries welcome.

Woman at fence experiencing crane.

The intensity of a crane flying overhead felt exhilarating and I wanted to fly as free and elegantly as she did.

INSPIRATION EVERYWHERE

I am inspired by an eye-catching piece of fabric, an interesting color combination, the unique shape of a piece of pottery, the flowers in my garden...

Through my artwork I explore my Afro-Caribbean heritage. I create intricate quilted wall art and ceramic pieces that are both decorative and functional. Each medium allows me to explore the hard and soft qualities with abstract designs and figurative images, focusing mainly on the female form. My inspiration often draws from the bold patterns and strong colors of African and Caribbean decorative Arts as well as the natural world.
